Several years ago, the needs of JP students were strongly brought to the attention of the MIT Office of Graduate Education (OGE). Following their visit to WHOI, the OGE provided the WHOI Student Organization a grant for $10,000 to improve student life, hold social events, and increase professional development opportunities in Woods Hole. OGE has graciously renewed the grant each year since. As your JP Reps, we have:
- Used a portion of the fund ($1600) to subsidize the JP retreat, support Jean-Luc Doumont’s visit put on by the Broader Impacts Group, and purchase a new television screen for the Student Centre.
- Maintained a reserve of a portion of the fund to fill funding gaps in the event that the GSC does not fund typical events (e.g. Social hours, buffins, etc).
- Have allocated $200 per department for student events.
- Opened up a portion ($5000) of the funds to be used by you!
The Fund is to support (1) Student life, (2) Social events, and (3) Professional development.
So - apply to use these funds! Bean bag chairs for the student centre, St. Patrick’s day dinner, outer Cape summer camping trip, postdoc networking lunches - if you can come up with it, we’d be happy to consider it.
Psst: Don’t forget that the JP Social Fund exists. Get some support for small events - pumpkin carving, pig roasting, etc!
